Recording the sound coming from your own Windows 11 PC is useful for tutorials, software demos, streaming, game capture, troubleshooting and content creation. The confusing part is that Windows does not use one universal “record everything I hear” button. The right method depends on whether you want the whole desktop mix, one application, a game, a microphone, or separate audio tracks.

For most users in 2026, OBS Studio is the most flexible option. Xbox Game Bar is convenient for quickly recording supported apps and games with system audio. Stereo Mix can still work on some PCs, but it depends heavily on the audio driver and hardware manufacturer.

Quick Answer: Which Method Should You Use?

Goal Best Starting Point
Record a tutorial with desktop audio OBS Studio
Record one app’s audio separately OBS Application Audio Capture
Quick game/app recording Xbox Game Bar
Record “what you hear” as an input device Stereo Mix, if the audio driver provides it
Separate mic, game and music tracks OBS Studio with multiple audio sources/tracks

1. OBS Studio Is the Most Flexible Windows Option

OBS Studio can record video, desktop sound, microphones and individual application audio. It is free and widely used for streaming, tutorials and screen recordings.

Download OBS only from the official OBS Project site. Avoid third-party repackaged installers.

2. Record All Desktop Audio in OBS

For a basic recording, open Settings > Audio and verify that Desktop Audio points to the output device you actually use—such as your speakers or headphones.

Play a test sound and watch the OBS Audio Mixer. If the Desktop Audio meter moves, OBS is receiving system audio.

3. Record One Application Instead of the Whole Desktop

Modern OBS versions on Windows support per-application audio capture. This is useful when you want to capture a browser, game or media player without recording notification sounds from everything else.

OBS documents the current workflow in its Application Audio Capture Guide. OBS Studio 30.1 and later can also include audio with supported Window Capture or Game Capture sources.

4. Avoid Double Audio and Echo in OBS

If you add a dedicated Application Audio Capture source while global Desktop Audio is still recording the same program, OBS may capture that sound twice. The result can sound louder, hollow or echoed.

When isolating specific apps, disable or mute the duplicate global source as appropriate.

5. Xbox Game Bar Can Record App and System Audio

Windows 11 includes Xbox Game Bar for recording games and supported applications. Press Windows + G to open it.

Microsoft’s current Game Bar guidance includes a Capturing setting that can include game, app and system sounds in the recording. The keyboard shortcut Windows + Alt + R starts and stops recording for supported content.

Microsoft documents system-audio inclusion in Xbox Game Bar recording guidance.

6. Game Bar Is Convenient but Less Flexible Than OBS

Game Bar works well when you need a quick recording and do not need complex scenes, multiple audio buses, audio filters or detailed track routing.

For training videos, streaming or content production where you need microphone processing and separate audio, OBS is usually the stronger tool.

7. What Is Stereo Mix?

Stereo Mix is a recording input provided by some audio drivers. Instead of listening to a microphone, it captures the combined audio being played through the computer’s sound device—often described as “what you hear.”

Not every Windows 11 computer exposes Stereo Mix. Its availability depends on the audio hardware and driver.

8. How to Check for Stereo Mix

  1. Right-click the speaker icon and open Sound settings.
  2. Select More sound settings.
  3. Open the Recording tab.
  4. Right-click inside the device list and show disabled devices if that option is available.
  5. If Stereo Mix appears, enable it.

If Stereo Mix never appears, do not install random audio drivers just to force the feature. Check the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s official audio driver first.

9. Stereo Mix Can Capture More Than You Intended

Because Stereo Mix records the combined output, notification sounds, browser tabs and other applications may be included. That can be useful for simple recordings but poor for professional editing.

Per-application capture in OBS is cleaner when you need isolation.

10. Record Your Microphone Separately

For tutorials and commentary, add the microphone as its own input in OBS. This gives you independent control over microphone level and desktop sound.

Keeping them separate helps you reduce background noise, adjust narration volume and mute one source without destroying the other.

11. USB vs XLR Microphones

A USB microphone is usually the easiest choice for a Windows desk because the audio interface is built into the microphone. XLR microphones require a separate interface or mixer but offer more upgrade flexibility.

For a direct comparison, see USB vs XLR Microphone for Streaming. PCFix411 also covers dynamic vs condenser microphones.

If you are building out the physical audio side of a recording desk, the GearReady Home Studio Gear collection is the relevant GearReady destination for microphones, audio and studio accessories.

12. OBS Audio Tracks Can Help During Editing

OBS can record different sources to separate audio tracks. For example, you can put the microphone on one track, game audio on another and music on a third.

This is especially useful when you plan to edit the recording later because you can adjust the mix without re-recording everything.

13. Set Sensible Recording Levels

Audio that clips above 0 dB cannot be repaired cleanly. Keep normal speech and system audio below the red zone and leave headroom for sudden peaks.

If the Windows output is extremely loud, lowering the source or application level before it reaches OBS can produce a cleaner recording than simply pulling the OBS fader down after clipping occurs.

14. Headphones Help Prevent Feedback

If you are recording a microphone while desktop sound is playing through speakers, the microphone can pick up the speakers and create echo or feedback. Headphones prevent most of that acoustic leakage.

15. Recording Browser Audio

For a browser tutorial, OBS Application Audio Capture can isolate Chrome, Edge or Firefox. If the browser changes window titles frequently, OBS recommends matching by executable name where appropriate.

If you are troubleshooting browser sound rather than recording it, PCFix411’s browser audio troubleshooting guide addresses playback failures.

16. Recording Game Audio

OBS Game Capture plus audio capture is suited to a full streaming workflow, while Game Bar provides a quick built-in option. Use whichever matches your needs rather than running multiple capture programs at the same time.

Two applications trying to hook the same game or audio device can cause conflicts on some systems.

17. Recording Streaming Services and Protected Content

Some apps and services use DRM or protected video/audio paths. A recording tool may capture a black screen, silence or restricted output. Do not bypass access controls or copyright protections.

Use recording tools for content you own, have permission to capture, or are legally allowed to record.

18. What About Virtual Audio Cables?

Virtual audio cable software creates virtual input/output devices that can route sound between applications. This is useful for advanced streaming, podcast and remote-production workflows.

OBS’s official Application Audio Capture guide describes virtual-audio-cable routing as an option for applications that do not work properly with direct per-app capture.

19. If OBS Shows No Desktop Audio

  1. Confirm Windows is playing sound through the expected output device.
  2. Check OBS Settings > Audio.
  3. Make sure the Audio Mixer source is not muted.
  4. Check Windows Volume Mixer for app-specific routing.
  5. Restart OBS after changing the default audio device.
  6. Update or reinstall the audio driver if Windows itself has audio problems.

If Windows audio is unstable at the driver level, see Windows 11 Driver Problems.

20. If the Recording Has Echo

Look for duplicated sources first. Common causes include Desktop Audio plus Application Audio Capture recording the same program, a microphone monitoring its own output, or speakers feeding back into the microphone.

Mute sources one at a time until the duplication disappears.

21. If the Recording Is Out of Sync

Long recordings, USB audio devices and heavily loaded PCs can create timing problems. Close unnecessary background applications, use stable drivers, and avoid mixing multiple devices running at very different sample rates when possible.

OBS allows sync-offset adjustments, but solve the hardware or performance problem first if drift keeps increasing over time.

22. 44.1 kHz vs 48 kHz

48 kHz is common for video and streaming workflows; 44.1 kHz is common in music. The important part is consistency. Running the interface, Windows and OBS at incompatible sample rates can contribute to resampling or device problems.

23. Record a Short Test Before a Long Session

Before recording an hour-long tutorial or stream, capture 30–60 seconds that includes system audio, microphone speech and any game/application sound. Play the file back with headphones.

Checking meters is not the same as checking the finished recording.

24. Simple OBS Setup for Tutorials

  1. Add Display Capture or Window Capture.
  2. Add Application Audio Capture or configure Desktop Audio.
  3. Add your microphone.
  4. Set recording format and location.
  5. Make a one-minute test.
  6. Verify audio balance.
  7. Start the full recording.

25. Simple Game Bar Setup

  1. Press Windows + G.
  2. Open Settings > Capturing.
  3. Choose the audio behavior you want.
  4. Open the game/app.
  5. Press Windows + Alt + R to start.
  6. Press the shortcut again to stop.
  7. Check the saved MP4 in the Videos/Captures folder.

Bottom Line

For most Windows 11 users who need reliable system-audio recording, OBS Studio is the best long-term tool because it can capture the whole desktop, individual apps and microphones separately. Xbox Game Bar is excellent for quick app/game recordings, while Stereo Mix remains a useful legacy-style option when the PC’s audio driver provides it. Pick the method that matches the recording instead of forcing one setup to do everything.
