Android TV Box Specs Explained: RAM, Storage, Wi-Fi and 4K Support

Android TV boxes are often advertised with a long list of numbers: 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5, 4K, 8K, HDR and more. Some of those specifications matter a lot. Others are easy to overvalue.

The best Android TV box is not necessarily the one with the biggest numbers. It is the one that has enough memory, reliable networking, useful ports and the software support needed for the apps you actually use.

RAM: How Much Is Enough?

RAM helps the device keep apps and interface elements available without constantly reloading them. For basic streaming, 2GB can work. A device with 4GB generally gives Android more breathing room for multitasking, larger apps and smoother navigation.

Modern streaming services use codecs to compress video efficiently. Support for H.264, H.265/HEVC, VP9 and AV1 can affect compatibility and how efficiently high-resolution video plays. AV1 support is increasingly useful because it can provide high image quality at lower bitrates when the service and hardware support it.
